Creating a Sustainable DeKalb
DeKalb County is Going Green and so can You!
In January 2009, County Commissioner Kathie Gannon, Super District 6 created the DeKalb County Green Commission with the support of CEO Burrell Ellis. Commissioner Gannon noted: “as DeKalb County increases its expectations of citizens to use less and conserve more, our county government is obligated to lead by example and a countywide advisory commission on sustainable issues is an effective way to generate ideas and community support for green initiatives.”
Who we are:
The DeKalb GREEN COMMISSION is a 20 member volunteer Commission created to advise and promote sustainability initiatives in DeKalb County by ensuring that we are providing the resources necessary to improve the quality of life of our citizens and facilitating good stewardship of our many resources. The Commission is committed to helping people find ways to incorporate sustainable practices into their daily lives. For example, the Commission compiles tips on various aspects of sustainable living like: “50 tips for conserving water” and “Tips for saving on energy costs”. They will also promote sustainability planning and develop recommendations for countywide sustainability priorities.
Another initiative of the Green Commission is the “Green University” program, an innovative concept designed for elementary aged students that will award green credits for specific activities in areas of sustainable development.
Green Commission Activities:
• Long term planning to develop recommendations for policy priorities for the county through the Sustainability Plan
• Spring 2009 Green Commission Kick-off and Community, Business and County Expo
• Successful application for certification as a “Green Community” by the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC)
• Workshops and forums on sustainable programs and practices like: Water Conservation; Community and Home Organic Gardening (January 2010); Energy Efficiency (May 2010) and the Green Products Expo (September 2010)
